What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

Sections with different view

I would like to have the sections look different. If one could have a different "scoop_intro" block for each section, that would be nice. That way one could choose to make the left table unique for each section. Has anybody done that?

HTML in Sigs

In my sig for my account on K5, I have links. This means, of course, that what I have to type to get my sig is longer than what actually appears. It seems that my sig gets chopped off at the end despite what appears being ony a few lines. The sig cutoff should be determined by what actually appears to readers, not what goes in the box.

Basically I outline two possible implementations which let users know that their [new->old] comments have been replied to. One is better for the user, the other is better for the system...

How about a feature where users can submit poll ideas for the frontpage. And then vote on them.

Making scoop more lightweight.

And I don't mean from a server side perspective, but rather from a user's point of view. Scoop is cool software, but a site just starting without many readers, up a lot of the features are kind of overkill. Below I present my `small site' wish list for a more lightweight scoop UI geared towards smaller sites.

Diary Subscriptions

Several Kuro5hin users have requested that scoop could have a new box that alerts users to when a diary is posted from a preselected list of users. The box would look very similar to the hotlist box that is currently implemented, but instead would list diaries. This request is not new, but I have come up with some ways to implement it.
Unfortunately I have had trouble implementing this myself, as I have little experience with Perl and MySQL. I am hoping that a more expert programmer in these areas can build on my ideas.

Stuff for spiders

I was just out looking through google to see how my site could be found via search engine, and noticed that it didn't rank very highly, even for phrases that I know are repeated, or are in prominent places. (Ok, fine, I was ego-surfing, and the result was a pretty harsh blow.) Is there any way of getting per-story information into, say, a meta description tag, so the search spiders pay more attention to the page?
