What is Scoop
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog. Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion, and making sure that the signal remains high. More >>

Where can I get Scoop
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz

You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz

The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop

The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.

For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current README and INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.

If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.

Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.

If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

Additional sorting option Feature Requests

As k5 is attracting more users and growing larger, finding the comments I want to track is taking a lot more time. I think another sorting option could help this problem.

Best Comments Feature Requests

We've all (well, most) seen the 10 Hot Comments Slashbox on Slashdot. As Kuro5hin (and other Scoop sites) grow, it'll be harder to find the real content in the stories. I think that Scoop should have a Best Comments box. Perhaps the number of comments in the box could be user selectable.

"Editorial" Polls Feature Requests
By cp , Section Wishlist []
Posted on Mon Jan 15, 2001 at 12:00:00 PM PST
Editorials provide some feedback as to why stories are voted up or down, but more feedback could be obtained if scoop allowed for "editorial" polls (polls concerning the voting process, which would disappear once the story is accepted in the same way editorial comments currently disappear). The effect would be to provide more feedback to the author as well as to channel the voting process in a productive fashion -- i.e., focusing the voter on the rational reasons for voting as one does. See the poll for this submission as a stock example of the sort of poll I envision.

What I propose is an improvement in the sort of negative data an author recieves regarding a submission.

Saving works in progress. Feature Requests

Perhaps as an addition at the end of the list of the goings on of scoop, could be just a "Save" button during the submit story process so that users can leave an article/diary entry mid-thought and return to it later. I know the obvious argument against it "you have a computer, save it there" but it would be nice to have a copy online, especially for those of us who use many different computers and may want to work on it at different places (*cough* like those of us at work *cough*).

Ratings suggestions Feature Requests

I really appreciated rusty's addition of the open ratings for comments... but unfortunately it still does not eliminate people from going back to old comments and rating them all down, causing people to lose their trusted status, worldwide massacre, and thermonuclear warfare between supposedly allied nations under strict peace treaties. Okay, so I exaggerated. But I'll get to my point. I came up with a few things I think might be nice to have for the ratings system.

anonymizing the submission queue Feature Requests
By Whizard , Section Wishlist []
Posted on Mon Jan 08, 2001 at 12:00:00 PM PST
A while back, I posted a comment in a story thread on K5 with this idea, and it got rated relatively highly, but not much discussion was made on the topic, and the recent issues with the "Anne Marie" story posts have made me wonder about it more. Essentially, what if stories were anonymous until they made it out of the submission queue. Read on for implementation ideas...

Sticky Sigs Feature Requests
By Defect , Section Wishlist []
Posted on Sun Jan 07, 2001 at 12:00:00 PM PST
As some of us know, the sig's we can create in the User Preferences apply to every single comment a user has posted, rather than only applying to posts created then on, or until the sig is changed or removed.

I'm requesting that sig's become part of the comment, so they are permanently part of comments posted within the sig's "lifespan."
