What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

So I tried to do an rdf_fetch on k5's backend, after all it's one of the defaults.. previously it worked, but then a few days ago or so, the fetch failed with a not-well-formed error message.

Add images, background tints, sounds, etc
|

It would be nice to be able to
+ add a small graphic, a thumbnail link, etc, to stories.
+ being able to choose a shade or tint for the background colour when submitting stories.
+ mouse over image changes and mouse over sounds.
This would add more variety to each site and should only be used in certain stories where it is relevant. Queue's are currently blocking text not correctly formatted, and so users could simply preview the image, within the story and continue to vote as per usual. Editors can make any final touches or adjustments if needed. Maybe files could be uploaded, when submitting stories and with some filtering image size limits may also be set. Surely scoop will need to integrate multimedia basics like this.

Important Safety Tip

When modifying Scoop blocks and boxes and other code, make sure to test against both logged-in and un-logged in access. Test every time you make a change. Trust me.

"donating" your PC to scoop
|

Hello friends... I dont know if this has already been posted, if yes then dump it..
I am suggesting a "donate PC" option in order to solve the fake accounts problem ... At least the vote originated from the "donated" PC should count more than any other vote.

Opera Bug
|
|
By UncleMikey , Section Code [] Posted on Thu Mar 14, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST
|

I thought maybe it was just me. Opera used to work against K5 and other scoop sites; then, one day, it stopped.
It doesn't seem to be just me. Other Opera users have reported they can't use Radio Free Tomorrow, and one of them has tested against K5 as well with the same results.
The symptoms: users can't stay logged in -- changing pages drops their login; and users can't post anonymous while not logged in -- they get the form key error.

A bug in quote-character conversion.

Scoop, when taking input, converts typed quotes into " characters. However, it appears to do it at the point of storage, rather than when outputting the data- this is quicker, but leads to a slight problem in some cases.

Diary Subscriptions now in Beta on this site
|
|
By hillct , Section Code [] Posted on Tue Mar 12, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST

Due to the overwhelming response to comments about diary subscriptions, I was inspired ot get off my ass and write up the feature. My implementation was inspired by the excellant work of dannygene on his first scoop patch, with help of Defect and others in initial testing & debugging.
You'll find a 'subscribe' link next to each author's name on stories. Make sure you have enabled the 'Flexible Hotlist Box' in your scoop.k5 display preferences, and you'll see a link at the top to specify the 'Diaries' view of your hotlist. Check it out. Let me know what you think.
Update [2002-3-13 14:29:27 by hillct]: I have modified the behavior of the 'Stories' view of hotlist_flex such that diaries belonging to the logged in user are not listed there any longer. It seemed useful to have them listed there since they were material written by the current user, and that is what that view was intended for, but I am not a heavy user of diaries and I understand from a few who have voiced their opinion, that listing diaries in this view would make for a vary large list vary quickly, with limited benefit. Let me know if the new behavior is better or worse.

Proposal: Weighted average comment sorting option
|
|
By haflinger , Section Code [] Posted on Mon Mar 11, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST
|
|
There is a tendency for comments which have been rated only by one or two people to have extreme ratings. This proposal suggests a way to prevent comments from being ranked either very high or very low until they've had a certain minimum number of ratings.
