What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

After testing the new editing queue I have discovered a few errors. One of these is a bug, the other is a usability issue.

Opera vs Scoop Redux

One of my users on Radio Free Tomorrow finally figured out why Opera broke when used with Scoop sites (particularly mine :-() -- Opera is allergic to spaces in cookies!
I had my 'site_id' in my httpd.conf set to 'Radio Free Tomorrow'. This should result in a cookie of 'Radio Free Tomorrow_session', but Opera drops everything after the first space!
I took the spaces out. It works now :-)

"Auto-post is on" unnecessary

Although it is useful to have the rest of the message ("A posting decision will be made after 36 hours if no threshold is reached.") the status of specific configuration items is of interest only to those who run Scoop sites, not those who merely use them.
Plus, the first sentence dosen't really add any content, because anyone who reads the second sentence will know what is going on.

Modstorms

I've noticed lately on kuro5hin, frequent Diary posts shouting about these things posters call "modstorms": abusive acts of retaliation against people one dislikes or "loses out to" in a discussion, by taking grief out directly on the person you have issues with by moderating down (indiscriminantly) all their comments. I propose a "counterweight" to this behavior on the scoop side of things.

Why the ^M's ?

on debugging some of my own boxes output i noticed a show source of the scoop generated pages has ^M's ans the newline character. Is having a DOS newline an option? I would rather have \n as im on unix 99% of the time.

Scoop Universe. Unification of scoop sites.
|
|
By Iasson , Section Code [] Posted on Mon Apr 01, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST

Hello friends!
What about the unification of multiple scoop sites in order to have the same stories queue?
Whenever a reader post a story he should be asked whether he wants this story to be posted to the site he is logged in only, or alternatively to all scoop sites that are members of the universe.
Also every scoop administrator should be able to choose if he accepts stories posted to other scoop sites to enter into the queue of his own site.
It is very nice to have those nice scoop stars, but he have to implement a gravity law for the sites that wish to enter to a universe.
Of course the only common thing between scoop stars will be the queue. Every scoop site should be able to have different members, different database and different voting algorithm in order to judge the stories.

Patch For AdminStories.pm
|

By Talez , Section Code [] Posted on Sat Mar 23, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST

This is my first patch so it may be badly coded or even incorrect in some parts. Hopefully, if it does work, this patch will change the frontpage posting algorithm to be more in tune with the community's wishes.
