What is Scoop
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog. Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion, and making sure that the signal remains high. More >>

Where can I get Scoop
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz

You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz

The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop

The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.

For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current README and INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.

If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.

Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.

If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

possible bug in polls Bugs

I think there's a bug in K5's polling. It appears that you can vote in a poll during the moderation phase and then vote again once the story passes out of the submission queue.

User details link in story/diary heading. Feature Requests

There's a link in the heading of comments call user details. I use it quite a bit. Clicking on it gives you information on the user as well as links to their previous comments, stories and diary.

In story and diary heading on the other hand the users name is a link which goes to a list of previous stories (whether you click it in stories or diary it still just shows stories). It would be a lot more useful if this was replaced with a link to user details.

Plain Text Comment Bug Bugs

Selecting "Plain Text" to format your comments without regard for html no longer adds <br> tags to newlines. No HTML is parsed either (as is expected) so it just ends up being a blob of entirely unformatted text.

Newer comments and mojo calculation Feature Requests
By loner , Section Wishlist []
Posted on Mon Dec 11, 2000 at 12:00:00 PM PST
A couple of times in K5 I've noticed that after posting a controversial comment, my trusted user status is repeatedly removed then restored within short periods of time, as the comment's rating yo-yos between 1 and 5.

Possible fix: don't count the ratings for the current day's comment when calculating the mojo. Only count comments that are at least one day old, giving the scores time to settle a bit before they can affect one's trusted status.

Automatic time zone pref changes Feature Requests

I just noticed on K5 that my display preference for time zone was still set to PDT, making everything appear to be an hour off. It seems that Scoop should be able to change between standard and daylight saving time automatically for the user.

Comment stats on Moderation Queue display New Code
By Mystic , Section Code []
Posted on Mon Dec 11, 2000 at 12:00:00 PM PST
It was annoying that as of now, the only way to find out the number of posts to a story in the moderation process, is to actually go to the story , following the link from the queue list.

In this post, I submit a patch to show the comments status in the moderation story list itself.

Show number of votes on a comment Feature Requests
By Eloquence , Section Wishlist []
Posted on Fri Dec 08, 2000 at 12:00:00 PM PST
I already submitted this on the old site, but it was shortly before the hiatus and it probably got lost. I think it would be very helpful to see the number of votes on a comment next to the average rating, as this would give much more meaning to the comment ratings (a 4.50 with 10 votes is much better than a 5.00 with 1 vote). This doesn't need to have any further practical implications WRT mojo and such, it would just enhance the quality of ratings.

Limiting text in Intro Copy Feature Requests
By enterfornone , Section Wishlist []
Posted on Fri Dec 08, 2000 at 12:00:00 PM PST
This is probably a bit K5 specific, but I thought I'd post it here rather post yet another trivial meta.

Since the introduction of diaries there have been a lot of people using the Intro Copy box to post their entire story. Sure, it's only affecting diaries, but it's still annoying.
