Limiting text in Intro Copy Feature Requests

This is probably a bit K5 specific, but I thought I'd post it here rather post yet another trivial meta.

Since the introduction of diaries there have been a lot of people using the Intro Copy box to post their entire story. Sure, it's only affecting diaries, but it's still annoying.

Two obvious solutions. The first would be to limit the amount of text allowed in the intro box. If the poster goes over the limit either not allow them to post, or inform them they are going to look like an idiot and probably get flamed and ask if they are really sure they want to go ahead.

A less drastic solution would be to put the following in the New Diary Entry screen.

DO NOT PUT THE WHOLE STORY IN "INTRO COPY" UNLESS IT IS LESS THAN 2 SHORT PARAGRAPHS LONG! "Intro Copy" is only for the first 2 paragraphs or so of text. Put the rest of the story in the next box down. Thanks! :-)
Hard to miss this on the Submit page. No doubt there's a block for this (would have to reboot to bring up my Scoop install, the docs mention submission_guidelines, I guess there is a diary version too).

I prefer soft limit (3.00 / 1) (#1)

I would like it implemented this way:
  • This should be implemented in Diary only. Let moderators take care of story posts.
  • When the actual "New diary" page comes, it should include a warning saying that only X words/characters are allowed. But no hard limit.
  • If the user submits with more than X word/chars in the Intro, the diary is not posted, but returned back to him for editing with an error message saying that the limit has exceeded.
  • The post is not accepted until the limit is honoured.

A post in my Dev. Note

I think... (5.00 / 1) (#4)

That there should be a hard limit, and not let them post more than that in the story queue. But I also think that this limit should be definable by the admins. So I guess another var would be needed...
