What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

FreeBSD port for scoop

I've created a FreeBSD port for scoop-0.9. For those of you unfamiliar with the FreeBSD ports system, it basically automates the installation and maintenance of third-party applications. But if you even care about this post, you already knew that. :-)

I've been working on a file library module for Scoop since about spring. I stopped in the summer because of other projects, but now I have a bit of time to work on it some more.
Here are some features it has and some that are still in process.

Please Vote on Account Creation Behavior

As is generally agreed upon, the current account creation behavior of Scoop is unnecessarily cumbersome and confusing for new users. I refer you to the thread (and its subthreads) "Account attack strategy" on the scoop-dev mailing list. The poll attached to this diary entry is designated to vote on the new behavior desired by the majority of Scoop developers. Please participate.

Publish or Not?

I was thinking it might be a nice idea to have a feature where a user could work on articles over a time period, before publishing it. This way they could save a draft copy, and work on it as time permitted.
Although I'm a bit exhausted right now, and the idea is also a bit fuzzy, I was thinking of something like a publish status bit..
Once it's been "published" they can't change the status but until they do publish it, they can go back and work on it until it's ready.
This might lead to more well thought out articles, and more lengthly articles. It could also help if their browser crashes (I've been using opera lately and it's been crashing alot :)
Anyway, what do you think?

themes... still going (slowly) forward

There's so many things I want themes to do, and I'm not really sure how to handle them all. Please bear with me while I ramble and try to sort things out; if you have any suggestions to make it work a bit better, or if I'm going off on the wrong track completely, please let me know.
Oh yeah, and all of the stuff below that says "can" or "does" actually means "I want it to be able to". I've barely started coding, and realised that I haven't finished planning yet.

My useless perl script.

Here is a useless perl script I've been working on. It's my first major perl code, so forgive any stupidities (but please point them out to me).
Modified from some sugesstions given to me in my kuro5hin diary.
This is a perl script that takes a text file as produced from mysqldump, and converts it so that it can be used on an interbase server.

There was a poll awhile ago about a scoop rewrite. How far away might it be?
