Publish or Not? Developer Diary

I was thinking it might be a nice idea to have a feature where a user could work on articles over a time period, before publishing it. This way they could save a draft copy, and work on it as time permitted.

Although I'm a bit exhausted right now, and the idea is also a bit fuzzy, I was thinking of something like a publish status bit..

Once it's been "published" they can't change the status but until they do publish it, they can go back and work on it until it's ready.

This might lead to more well thought out articles, and more lengthly articles. It could also help if their browser crashes (I've been using opera lately and it's been crashing alot :)

Anyway, what do you think?

I think this is a very good idea.  It should probably have a few restrictions though, like limiting the number of drafts a user can have and preventing a single draft from occuppying an exhorbitant amount of space.  A few questions though:
  1. Would there be features to allow the author to specify an "access" list, that might allow certain people to view the pages and others not?  I ask because this might be handy if a group of authors are all working on a single article, yet don't want the general public to see it before it is finished.
  2. Would the draft ever expire (if so, how long before it does)?  This might be helpful to automatically clean up derelict drafts that forgotten accounts may have had at one point.  This could be a double-edged sword, of course (for obvious reasons).
All in all, I like the idea.  It could promote "collaborative authorship," which I have always been interested in.  Furthermore, it's a nice feature for users to have: they may have a great idea for a story just before they head off for work one day, and jot down a quick intro or abstract before leaving.  Then, they could finish the article when they get home that night, or the next day, or whatever.  Very nice idea, IMO.
