some people use it when they design software. for example, take something like a 'story' on k5. a state transition diagram would tell you like, you know, when it should be in the editing queue, when it goes to the voting queue, and under what conditions. in fact it would be incredibly simple to understand and anyone could look at it and know what was going on.
