Ping Users Feature Requests

On my small but growing scoop based site (stetsonsucks.com) I am forseeing a need for a 'user ping'...

Basically, having the system send email to everyone's realemail and either looking for errors in the send (user doesn't exist errors from the mail server) or expecting a response from the user from that email address. This would be used rarely, (maybe every 6 months) to prune the user database.

In a related note, it would also be useful to have a "last login" field in the user database - as another measure of (in)activity.

Measures of inactivity are something I've been wondering about in sites like kuro5hin. There is this userbase that expands... yet how do you know how many of them are actually involved? My thoughts were that maybe it ought to based upon their posting/commenting activity. Or maybe just their voting activity. Or maybe, as you suggest, how often they log in.

I think this is needed, especially since on sites like k5 the percentage of users affects the vote count needed to get a story posted.

Anywho, I like how Experts Exchange does it - if you have not logged in for three months (I think it is) they send you a polite email saying, basically: "We've noticed you've not logged in for three months. Please log in within the next month or your account may be deleted." And then there's a link to the login page. You could also add a link to say, "Delete me from the user database"
