There Are No Stupid Questions Announcements

It looks even more like a default Scoop install than Ingenuitas.org, but Practical Unix is somewhat live and kicking.

I won't rehash the single story on the site too much except to say that it's intended as a discussion forum where anyone should be able to feel comfortable asking questions about getting things done with a Unix or Unix-like system.

Right now, it needs thought put in to the whole Topic/Section structure more than anything, but there's enough of a site there to discuss that. Tweaking of Scoop will occupy a fair bit of time in the near future, I'm sure.

So go on - pop over and break my site. Please.

Good work, you can create users and everything. Unlike me, who has made Ingenuitas.org not look like a fresh Scoop install but still cannot create users.

What I'm doing with the Topics on my site is to add them as the need comes up. I have all of my sections picked and up, but the topics I will add more as I go. I look forward to seeing how your site evolves.

Great job - one config problem - cookies (none / 0) (#3)

This is a great idea for a site. This sort of thing is really needed. It should be interesting to see if you're able to apply social engineering in such a way as to keep the discussion from degrading into the 'use google you moron' arena.

I did notice one bug though. There seems to be a cookie config problem. it seems that you set 'cookie_host' in httpd.conf to 'www.practicalunix.com' while (and this is a guess) the 'site_url' variable is set to 'http://practicalunix.com/'. This causes, among other things, the inability for users to login without editing the URL sent in the new account confirmation email, to include the 'www'. You should be able to correct this by setting site_url to 'http://www.practicalunix.com' and editing your httpd.conf to redirect requests from 'http://practicalunix.com' to the full URL. This can most easily be accomplished by adding another >virtualhost< entry that might look like this:
<VirtualHost 192.168.1.10>
   ServerName practicalunix.com
   RedirectPermanent / http://www.practicalunix.com/
</VirtualHost>

This entry should appear before the vhost entry in which scoop is configured. This should fix the cookie problem and avoid users getting cought in a cookie quagmire even if they type in the domain name by hand.
