I've just become a Trusted User (on k5), and earnt the right to Review Hidden Comments. I suspect I have got to the part of Kuro5hin which is relatively unexplored and unused. I think it could do with some modifications. This article contains my suggestions for making the Review Hidden Comments interface easier to use and hence more popular. Hopefully the consensus obtained from this item will be taken into account by the Powers That Be.

First of all, I clicked on the Review Hidden Comments link, and it says there are more than 30 hidden comments. No way do I have time to read all those, whether it is my responsibility or not. Conveniently, previously Trusted Users have been there before me, and rated them fairly accurately. The list right now has comments with 11 ratings, score 0.18; 12 ratings, score 0.16; and if I look down a bit, 29 ratings, score 0.03. I don't think that my opinion of a comment is going to be very high if about 80% if Trusted Users are rating it a zero. Consequently, I suggest that if a comment has been rated by 1/6 of the number of users required to vote a story posted (currently 88/6 = 14), and it still rates below 0.75, it is summarily dumped. On my the current list of 30 comments, 15 would be already gone. As a corollary of this, replies to dumped comments should be dumped as well.

Further, on Review Hidden Comments:

  • Comments should be ordered from lowest number of ratings to highest. This allows people with little free time to see the debatable comments first.
  • Since K5 knows whether I have rated a comment, I would like to see only Hidden Comments which I have not rated on the list.
  • There could be the option of including Hidden Comments in the standard collection of comments following a story, denoted with a different colour as are Editorial Comments.
  • When I click on a comment, I would like to see all Hidden Comments attached to the same story. At the moment, I sometimes get just one, sometimes get lots. The less time I spend clicking, the more comments I can review.
  • After I rate a hidden comment, I am returned to a list of comments without a story. I'd much prefer to go back to the Review Hidden Comments page.

With the new mojo calculations, the more ratings a comment has, the more it is weighted, so all the more reason to add your vote to an already obscenely low score. Secondly, it is better that the comments are sorted chronologically because ratings on comments are also time-weighted, so if a comment was made several months ago, it's essentially already forgotten with respect to mojo.

I thought the review hidden comments link was actually pretty good, and it sure beat not having it at all (it's relatively recent) and before, the only chance you had at checking out a hidden comment was if you happened to pass over it when checking out a story, so if something was rated unfairly zero, then you had less chance of bringing it out into the open. (just to note: only, only rate comments zero if they truly do suck, are spam, or are horribly pointless flames, it's really not something that should be abused in the least bit (this has recently come out into the open with the addition of the ability to see who voted what.))
