What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

I am very interested in getting URLs to 'RDF' files from operators of Scoop sites.

This is the title of my new scoop site. The idea is to provide a base for urban explorers, infiltrators, freight hoppers, etc. The site is based in Philadelphia, PA, US, so it's geared toward Philly stuff for now. I'm hoping to attract users from all over, though, so the site will act as a community HQ for UE people.

As the sun rose yesterday morning, it found a very tired sysadmin and a brand new
Scoop-based website - TolkienGeeks.net! Reading over the list of scoop sites, I
can see that my suspicion is correct, this is the first Fantasy-oriented scoop site!
So go, discuss, have fun! All types of fantasy are welcome by me, but of course
its the community that truly decides :)

After a few hours of preparation and a couple months of development InTune (http://www.intune.org) opens it's doors. Visit InTune to discuss anything and everything having to do with music, including albums, concerts, instruments, sound systems, software, tools, artists and all that stuff. Oh, and guess what! It's all based on Scoop.... :)

I just brought this server up a few days ago. I plan on writing a few custom boxes, and maybe helping out with scoop code maintenance once I get more comfy with Perl.
I also have a beta site up which I plan to update to CVS on any major changes to the codebase, it is beta.stetsonsucks.com.

Glad to see Scoop.K5 is back up and running. I thought I'd drop a note about a Scoop site that I run, Opons.com, the Open Coupon Database. Users can read and post deals available at all kinds of online sites, including several for free money. Anyway, it runs a modified Scoop with more changes (hopefully) to come. Enjoy.

Disclosed Information: Not Exactly News
At http://www.disclosed.org, we've been hard at work trying to create a safe haven for Slashdot refugees who have noticed thier harsh decline over the past year or two. (Is Slashdot a cuss word here?). We have a lively staff of about 4 or 5 people, depending on what you count as a person. Please read more.

ShouldExist & infoAnarchy

ShouldExist is Eric Hanson's site for the discussion of ideas. Submit an idea, and it will be discussed. :-) It's a pretty active site, with 350 visits per day, and it runs a current version of Scoop.
infoAnarchy has been online since August 2000, it covers file sharing, anonymity, privacy, and cyber liberties. The main focus right now is file sharing: new sharing technologies, new releases, discussion of interesting concepts. We have around 400 visits per day and a decent growth rate. :-)
