What is Scoop
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog. Where can I get Scoop
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz

You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz

The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop

The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.

For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current README and INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.

If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.

Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.

If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

Stuff for spiders Feature Requests
By janra , Section Wishlist []
Posted on Mon Jan 21, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST

I was just out looking through google to see how my site could be found via search engine, and noticed that it didn't rank very highly, even for phrases that I know are repeated, or are in prominent places. (Ok, fine, I was ego-surfing, and the result was a pretty harsh blow.) Is there any way of getting per-story information into, say, a meta description tag, so the search spiders pay more attention to the page?

RFE: www.kuro5hin status box on the scoop site Feature Requests
By mrBlond , Section Wishlist []
Posted on Sun Jan 20, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST
www.kuro5hin.org is 504 at the moment. Could someone please put up a w3.k5 status box up on the scoop site so we can see some admin messages, like
  • [green] "Running like a smooth oiled machine."
  • [yellow] "Many users are getting timeouts atm, just try again later...", or
  • [red] "www.kuro5hin.org is down, go feed your habit at Anarchy online..."
Something like the S@h server status page.

Coexistant Scoop site Bugs
By spinfire , Section Help! []
Posted on Wed Jan 16, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST
I have been thinking about running a small time scoop site, however, I need it to be able to coexist with a few directories such as /mirror/. This is in itself not that difficult, however, I cannot geta directory listing of those directories (I get the scoop homepage instead).

Tiny bug with URL decoding Bugs
By fluffy grue , Section Code []
Posted on Sun Jan 13, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST
Seems that scoop doesn't properly decode the + symbol in a URL. According to the appropriate standards, a space can be represented in a URL by either a + or a %20, and a lot of older webbrowsers actually do favor a + over %20.

Annoucing Dialognow.org Announcements
By rashmi , Section Project []
Posted on Thu Jan 10, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST
DialogNow.org is a forum to promote dialog between the two peoples of India and Pakistan. In spite of being neighbours, there is little or not communication between people of the two countries, and consequently a lot of misunderstanding about the viewpoints of the other side.

There are a few Yahoo message boards where people animatedly discuss such issues, but it always degenerates into a shouting match. The hope is that a Scoop type moderation system can keep the dialog civil and meaningful.

Announcing Freedomboard.net Announcements
By Logan , Section New Scoop Sites []
Posted on Wed Jan 09, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST
Freedomboard.net is a site powered by scoop for the discussion of ideas related to freedom (in all its variety). There is room for discussions about politics, philosophy, ethics, news, or just quick links. The site is organized so that a variety of viewpoints can be discussed, from socialism to libertarianism to anarchism to just about any -ism that is brought up. The site is still very new, and some work is yet to be done to make it cosmetically unique, but it is fertile ground for all sorts of interesting discussions and debates. The desire is for all sorts of conflicting viewpoints to come together and discuss their differences, hopefully creating an interesting and educational experience for all that participate.
