The first Scoop translation (that I am aware of) is up, running and pretty stable! The portuguese site Correspondente.net opened at the end of June and is set to discuss the general issues of life and news in Portugal. Here are some notes and the first balance of its short life.
|
The first difficulty was the place to choose to host the site, since the requirements were a little off of the standard host sites. Following Scoop's suggestion, we choose Altercom.com which has been extremely helpful and great to work with (as we had some special requirements because of the translation of the code).
The translation was more or less easy and I got a good starting help from some of the vip developers here at scoop :) I thank hurstdog, rusty, panner, theantix and a couple more guys for some guidance and hints. What looked like a hard task (translating the whole site in a short period of time) actually turned into a feasible project and a very fun one to do.
For now the site is very simple and straightforward, to appeal to the less tech-savvy, so it can be open to a wide range of people. Some options were disabled for now, including the diaries and the comment options (too confusing for the initiated). The site was completely translated and there were some small adjustments, including the capability to submit stories using plain text (not only html).
The site opened up at the 20th June and got a nice coverage from sites, weblogs and had 3 small articles in the two major newspapers in the country. Not bad for an amateur site! Now we are announcing the site in other community sites, newsgroups, etc.. This way we can also analyze the difference of use between the internet users who are usually engaged in discussions and the ones that are less used to do that. Up until now the site has about 150 registered users and has had a good ammount of articles (25 to 30). The comments are not many yet, which is curious to observe.
The last good point to note is that this kind of site survives quite well without the admin intervention: for a while I have been very busy and without time to make articles or comments, but the site just went on. Plus, I haven't touched a line of code since the site went live. But that's not a surprise since the code has been serving the Kuro5hin site for so long and has a proven record.
Feel free to visit the site at www.correspondente.net. But, remember, it's portuguese, if you can read it :-)
Last but not the least: I must say that Kuro5hin is a great model of infopinion site and BTW thanks for the software, it works very well!
[infopinion] - a mix of "information + opinion".
