Death to UIDs Feature Requests

Hide the numeric user ID from the users.

I don't like the results of numeric user IDs, so I want to eliminate them. I don't care if they exist, as long as no one can see them.

The negative results I'm talking about are:

I could also say that they're something ugly to show to a user who shouldn't care about them, but frankly, I don't care about that.

UIDs belong to internal data structs (none / 0) (#1)

On one hand numeric UIDs are bad because they imply someone with lower UID is better because he's been around longer (which is not necessarily true). On the other hand seeing a handle with a brand new UID tells the user is new to the site or it is some fake account. This helps in story voting. I vote "Dump it" for all stories submitted by people who have no diary and only a few comments (and usually the comments are on his own story).

In short, I'd say hide the numeric UIDs. I usually check if people have comments or diaries so seeing their UID isn't important. Even less so because it is not immediately visible on the story submission or user information pages.

Since the handle is fetched for comments and stuff anyways, there's no point in supporting URIs which contain numeric UIDs instead of the handles. For the DB it is just the same if the query is performed with handle or UID.

Links that expose UIDs (none / 0) (#2)
by hillct on Fri Jun 14, 2002 at 08:59:11 AM PST

There are a few places that expose UIDs in links, I think on the user info pages and such. It would be relitively simple to convert them to nicknames, but I believe UIDs might be slightly faster to parse in some cases. The question is how big is the performance hit of diung an additional query, as measured against the social benefit of reducing the childishness of some users.

If you wanted, you could fix the problem by assigning UIDs randomly rather than sequentially. But ultimately the major problem is in your mind. Why does it matter? Does a user having a special UID really impact your life seriously? What is bad about people making novelty accounts with certain numbers? It's just not a big deal.
