Scoop Installed, now for customization Developer Diary

Not a dev note, I'm not a developer, just a sysadmin in the process of setting up my own scoop site. I'll just presume I can use my dev notes for any purpose relating to my scoop site. Hopefully this is not a problem..

Scoop is up and running on my local network, and what remains is to customize it. The dev box I'm using is a P166 with 72 MB RAM running Slackware 8 with perl V5.6.1, Apache/1.3.20, and MySQL 3.23.49a.

Issues right now include customizing the look and feel of the site and useability. In terms of customization, I've been able to do most of the basic stuff found in "Site Controls". I've been exploring the Block Editor, fiddling with various values while reading the Admin Guide (thanks to hurstdog, and everyone else.)

I know how to customize the boxes so that the box bg background is not the default. I simply edited "box_title_bg" so it equals the value I wanted, and then edited "box" with the same value. Don't know if there's a better way, but this is what worked for me. But how does one change the color of the links within the boxes? While I managed to change the box_bg colour, the links within the box are still the same colour as the default colour for scoop boxes. I'll continue to fiddle with this...

My Devel Thread - Installation and Configuration (none / 0) (#1)
by johnnyc on Tue Mar 12, 2002 at 07:45:16 PM PST

Well, this is handy. I don't feel like adding a new dev note when I really only need this for myself, so this marks the beginning of my own thread for setting up Urania.info. It's relatively private, but there's still the sense of permanence that I like about online diaries.

The installation has turned out to be the easiest part. The configuration and customization a little more difficult. Knowing perl and more html would help, but perhaps scoop will help this along.

Current Status:

Apache and mod_perl configured and not giving me any problems. When things go wrong, I re-run the install.pl script and just drop and rebuild the db. Note that with Apache I had problems with cookie host. It must match the host being used to access the site. Konqueror has weird bug described in this story. Odd.

Now the hard part is getting to know scoop and learning enough perl and html to customize it. To this end, read hurstdog's Intro To Scoop Development. Looks like a good place to start.

To Do:

  • Work out color scheme. See if it's possible to setup a way of changing colors as described here. Right now, it's fairly complicated. Doing the boxes is simple, editing the various templates is a chore and error-prone.
  • Read the latest greatest admin guide and all the docs. Thoroughly. janra seems to be taking care of documentation.
  • Work on logo. Where will it go? Center or left? Properties.
  • Develop structure. Determine sections. Boxes..how to add new boxes? Visit other scoop sites
  • Read this for a starting point in useability. This issue needs to be tackled since the bulk of the community are non-technical. A good starting point can be found here. This at least is a good working guide for a new user.

This seems to be about it for now. I may create other threads as the need arises.

cookie_host and IP addresses (none / 0) (#7)

Just a note to self for future reference. Netscape 6 and Konqueror have no problem with the cookie_host being set to an IP address in httpd-location.conf. The same setting will cause mozilla and Galeon to not handle the cookies correctly with the result being the user can't stay logged in.
