After over a year of waiting, the Scoop 0.9 has been released. Look under the
"Where can I get Scoop?" box for fresh tarballs. Also, it's available from CVS
under the tag scoop-0_9-stable. A list of major new features and bug fixes is
attached, along with a few known problems with this release. Many thanks to all
that helped with this release; a list of Scoop contributors is in the CREDITS
file included with Scoop.
A lot has been changed and improved since Scoop 0.8, and it's recommended
that anyone running older versions upgrade. Full instructions are available in
the file README.upgrade.

New features (in no particular order):
- Javascript-based dynamic comments and ratings.
- Blocks admin tool now works like Site Controls.
- Op and admin tool handling overhauled to be more extensible.
- Addition of auto-format mode for posting stories and comments.
- Rewritten cache code is faster and more efficient.
- Support for running bits of code after certain actions ("hooks").
- Built in ad server (currently in beta).
- Optional spell checker for stories and comments.
- Support for sub-sections of unlimited depth.
- Declines requests it can't handle, so static files are easier to serve
- Cron system can run boxes, and is admin-modifiable.
- Optional full text searchingg added.
- Users can choose a "start page" besides the regular front page.
- Per-story comment status controls are now implemented.
Bug fixes:
- Multiple formkeys are stored at the same time, so invalid form key errors are rare now.
- Several escaping fixes in blocks, comments, stories, and preferences.
- Permissions are properly followed when generating the RDF feed.
- Caching bug with blocks and vars has been eliminated.
- Subjects are no longer cut off when being inserted into the database.
- Topic admin tool sanely validates input.
- Stories accessed directly now handle section permissions correctly.
- Hotlisting from the front page no longer causes the wrong poll to be displayed on the front page.
- Various parts of the code cleaned up.
- Numerous other bugs fixed.
A few known issues that will be addressed later:
- Documentation continues to be sorely lacking. The Scoop Admin Guide is currently the best source of information, along with the scoop-help mailing list.
- The ad server is still incomplete in many ways, and lacks documentation. It is suitable for production use, but should be considered beta quality.
- The spell checker works sometimes, but don't be surprised if it doesn't. The module it relies on is still highly picky. Also, spell checking is limited in that it only checks spelling, and it only works with HTML formatted mode.
- There seem to be problems with static page caching, but they happen sporadically. Static pages are due for a re-write, so these problems will be dealt with then.
