More ways of sorting the comments Feature Requests

I would like to suggest two more ways to have the comments sorted: a variation on 'highest rated first' and a variation on 'newest first'.

As I understand it, 'highest rated first' only looks at the rating for the comment that started the thread and ignores the rest of the comments. I would like to have an option where the highest rated thread would be first - possibly an average of all comment ratings in the thread, with the number of comments worked into the equation as well. (I'm not sure exactly how to calculate this, however.) That way, a 2 comment that spawned a great thread would be listed above a 5 comment that didn't.

I believe 'newest first' also only looks at the comment that started the thread, regardless of replies. I would like an option where the thread that has been added to the most recently is listed first. I have seen this in action on another message board, and it's very handy - you don't have to scroll down too far to find all the new comments.

not really feasible, not really desirable (none / 0) (#1)

first of all, there is no way for SQL to sort the comments that way and still use an index.

Secondly, it promotes threads which are well-reasoned responses to 1's. This is good, but you shouldn't be reading anything with an initial comment of rating 1 anyway.

The only other thing it could do is pull down comments rated 5 which have a bunch of 1-3 replies to them.

Try doing: order highest first, less than 50 == nested, more than 50 == minimal (in your comment preferences settings, I believe).

It's pretty sweet. You get a quick overview of all the different threads going on, as well as the ability to 'open in new window' to see the full thread of comments that you're interested in. Probably the best thing about scoop is that it doesn't automagically put an "re: $parent_title" as the subject, forcing people to think about a good title for their posting.
