Simple "turn off" options

I would like to have an option to hide the column at the left with the titles of all stories, same thing with the one on the right and the "who's online" thing.

In my opinion the extra boxes are all totally inecessary and just waste pixels, so why should I be able to just turn them off? This should just be a simple if-statement per box basically.
