New Scoop Features Feature Requests

Its that time again, for me to post a big list of all the features that would be cool to have in scoop. None of these have been implemented yet, but some have been started. Features that have already been started will have the person's name beside them. Also, in a few days hillct will start maintaining a list of whose working on what. A 'task-manager' if you will. We haven't been using the sourceforge task manager lately, mostly cause I don't like it very much. Hillct volunteered to keep track of this, so now he is! Thanks hillct!

So here it is, new cool feature list. If you want to work on any of these, join and mail scoop-dev @ lists.sourceforge.net. We can give you input about the best way to go about it, and if you have any questions about implementation that is the place to ask.

  • Cron
    • New cron interface, where you can run boxes instead of just native code (panner has already started on this.)
  • User prefs.
    • Easy way for admins to add user prefs. Similar to Site Control interface. They should have a type, a name, and a default value.
  • Ads
    • Little update on where I am with ads. Right now, people can create advertising accounts, and admins can do a bit on specifying what to allow with ads. Todo: submit ads, choose with to display (with admin options on whether random, in order, etc), admin approve, etc etc. a bit more :) I don't need help, I just wanted people to know what was happening.
  • Documentation!
    • Better developer docs (more than the piddly amount I've written so far)
    • A section going over how it all ties together, not just what each part is
  • Random stuff:
    • Option in Story List to only see stories from a particular section, author, or topic.
    • Option to search Admin Notes on the search page if you have the perm edit_user and allow_admin_notes is turned on
    • Fulltext searching, 1 bugfix left (don't show rank on search by author) then I'm going to check that in.
    • Porting to other dbs. I saw a Dev Note by sfischer about porting to db2. That would be really cool. We have an idea of how we would like the db porting to go though, to make it easy for people to switch. If you're still up for porting it, join scoop-dev and mail us your ideas.
    • Activity box. Should be tracking more, and be more detailed
    • Scoop backups, in cron. More than just a simple mysqldump.
    • Block themes, and categories (with css), (would make different modes for user levels easier too)

Ok, so thats all I can think of off the top of my head right now (with lots of help from #scoop :), if you think of anything else we should add, post it below, I'll add it to the story.

Archiving and Backup (none / 0) (#1)
by Captain_Tenille on Wed Dec 05, 2001 at 03:53:36 PM PST

I've finally started working on the Archiving module (using the Storable methods), and I sent in a patch for a cron backup (using mysqldump, sigh) of the database. I should have a test box for this stuff set up soon so I can actually see if it works, but... that's what I'm doing.

Partioning? (none / 0) (#3)
by Jacques Chester on Wed Dec 05, 2001 at 05:48:30 PM PST

I'm not particularly familiar with how scoop works internally. I want to know whether the one physical machine can be "partitioned", so to speak, such that requests to different names brings up a different scoop site? Hence "usu" and "damien" would bring up two wholly unrelated sites served from the same box.

Or am I merely ignorant, doomed forever to misunderstand Apache's documentation :)

Email new replies to comments, or put them in a box for the user. Or both, and allow the user to select which way they want it.

Scoops are imperative and liable to investment or concern numerous individuals. A scoop is commonly another story, or another angle to a current or breaking news story. For the most part the story is unforeseen, or astonishing, and/or a previous mystery, so the scoop regularly originates from a selective source. content rewriting
