CVS vs. pre6 tarball New Code

After playing with scoop for a bit, I've noticed quite a few patches and boxes posted here on scoop.kuro5hin.org, as well as discussion here and on the list about various bugs. How much of this stuff makes it into CVS? Is the CVS code stable? Is scoop close to a new release? Is it better to use the pre6 tarball and comb the website for various patches, or to keep up with CVS?

cvs!! (5.00 / 1) (#1)

much much much better to use the cvs than to try to apply the plethera of patches on this site. Many of the patches here get rolled into cvs when me or rusty has the time. I've been offline for 2 weeks (gasp!) so I havn't been able to do too much scoop stuff. But I would definitly reccomend the cvs. Most of the time with bugfixes and the like we just put it directly into cvs. Most of the patches you see here are new features, or features someone might like that haven't gotten into the cvs code for one reason or another. Anyway, thats my take on the matter.

When will the Scoop Admins sit down and commit all the patches that is deemed worthy enough into the actual DB and sources of CVS rather than put it as patches?? There are way too many pacthes lying around..

How does one go about actually doing the upgrade?

I'm building a Scoop-based discussion site to replace the OpenNIC mailing list, and have 0.6-pre2 running _fairly_ well, but there seem to have been quite a few nifty new bits added since that was built. So I wanted to pull up to current, after reading hurstdog's commemt below, but upgrading just the Perl (though it did work fairly well) broke some important stuff. For example, the "Read More ..." link disappeared from the story synopsis on the front page.

Presumably, therefore, there are db bits that need upgrading as well (naturally, since that's where the boxes are). So how do I know which bits are upgrades? I looked in the patches subdirectory under structs, and several of those look even older then 0.6-pre2.

And how would I keep an upgrade from clobbering the changes I've made (especially the formatting repairs in a couple of the boxes and my templates)?

Aaargh! ;-)

Thanks,
-robin
