What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

One of the most obvious features that Scoop seems to be missing is the simple ability to click a lick on a story so that it does not show up for you again.
Use case: I have read a story. I am done with it. Make it go away...please!

Scoop on Apache 2?

Hi folks,
I've been wanting to play with scoop for a while, and I decided to go for it. One niggle though: I run Apache 2.x everywhere. Is it possible to install scoop on a Apache 2 webserver? And, if yes, how?

suggestions: time-stamps & auto-refreshing

While participating in the occasional rapid-fire discussion on Kuro5hin.org I noticed it is necessary to "refresh" a story's page fairly often. Unfortunately, since I am often multitasking I sometimes loose track of whether I just refreshed a page or not.
Time-Stamps
I think that listing the date-time of the page's generation right below/above the current system time would be really useful. You could see immediately whether you've recently refreshed the page or not.
Limited Auto-Refreshing
A related idea would be a method of automatic page refreshing. Although allowing unlimited/unconstrained auto-refreshing would lead to wasted server load for many reason, a limited auto-refreshing mechanism could probably be useful. I suggest adding a button to pages that allows the user to request a set number of auto-refreshes (i.e. 5, 10 or 15 refreshes) spaced a set number of minutes apart (i.e. 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes).

Embellishing the User Info Page

Possibly the least interesting page in Scoop is the user info page; at the moment it is just a blank page with five links on it. To save visiting 5 different pages to find out about a user, I humbly suggest that it might be more useful if some summary info could be included on the page.

I know that this has been requested many times in the past, but let me request it once more. It has become painfully obvious to me that there is, frankly, a lot of crap on certain Scoop sites now, and it'd be really nice to be able to opt out of it.
Slash has had this simple feature for as long as it's had moderation. Why is Scoop still lacking in that regard?
