What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

Feature Request: digest header and footer blocks
|
|
By Emil Volcheck , Section Wishlist [] Posted on Sat Jun 07, 2003 at 12:00:00 PM PST

There is currently one block "digest_headerfooter"
defined for story digests. The same block is
prepended and appended to each digest.
I'd like to request that there be two blocks
defined "digest_header" and "digest_footer" for
the beginning and end of each digest, respectively.
I help run the scoop site
concerns.youngmath.net.
It would be helpful to arrange for the digest to include "masthead" information for our group at
the end of each digest, but we don't want to repeat the same information at the start of each
digest.

So I've been thinking of a few things I'd like to see as premium member benefits. Apologies if I missed seeing them in previous requests.

Feature Request: Diary comments in Replies
|
|
By riceowlguy , Section Wishlist [] Posted on Wed Jan 29, 2003 at 12:00:00 PM PST

So, Scoop has the nifty feature of displaying new replies to a user's comments in a little box at the right of the screen. However, this does not include new comments posted to a user's diary entries (and, I would assume, stories), which means that I have to click two places to figure out if indeed I have no new comments waiting for my attention. How difficult would it be to implement that? How much more load on the server would that generate?
Also, another thing that bugs me about the replies feature is that any given new reply doesn't leave the list until you view the entire story that the comment is attached to. Simply clicking on the link to the reply doesn't clear it.
If both of these are more Kuro5hin.org-specific implementation issues as opposed to Scoop feature set implementation issues, let me know and I'll take my whine elsewhere...

Permission Groups

From my working life I have experience with two types of permission groups. I see one of them implemented within Scoop, so I'm wondering if anyone wants to take a crack and putting in the other type.

Making Scoop more user friendly

While scoop is a great content management platform one of the things that has always irked me is the clutter on the right side of the page. There are far to many options - "User preferences", "Display Preferences", "Comment Preferences", "Your comments", "Your stories", "Your ads", "Your diaries", "User info", "Review hidden comments", "Renew Subscription", "Logout", etc. In my opinion, most are either redundant or are not essential things that need to be on every page all the time. For example - how often do you need to modify your comment prefs? - I've never changed mine on any scoop site. So then why do I need the link right in front of me everywhere I go? I don't!

Is the new comment notifier broken?

After upgrading to 0.9 and 1.0 when a user comments on an article and returns to either the section listing or the index page, the comment they just made shows as a new, unread comment. Was that routine modified for .9 and 1.0? If so, why?
