What is Scoop
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog. Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion, and making sure that the signal remains high. More >>

Where can I get Scoop
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz

You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz

The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop

The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.

For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current README and INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.

If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.

Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.

If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

When viewing stories in the moderation queue, the polls do not include a Vote button. There is a radio option setup for the poll options (for me to choose), but below them is the Results | Other Polls without a Vote Button.

ShouldExist & infoAnarchy Announcements

ShouldExist is Eric Hanson's site for the discussion of ideas. Submit an idea, and it will be discussed. :-) It's a pretty active site, with 350 visits per day, and it runs a current version of Scoop.

infoAnarchy has been online since August 2000, it covers file sharing, anonymity, privacy, and cyber liberties. The main focus right now is file sharing: new sharing technologies, new releases, discussion of interesting concepts. We have around 400 visits per day and a decent growth rate. :-)

K5 Section Stories Box Boxes
By rusty , Section Code []
Posted on Tue Dec 05, 2000 at 12:00:00 PM PST
Prompted by a request on #kuro5hin, here is the code that creates the left-hand "Section Stories" box on K5. The code follows, feel free to cut and paste. For the template, I use a block called "sec_story_box", which is just the basic container HTML.

I hope that if people have done clever things with output, they'll also post boxes here, so we can all share them. Note the "Boxes" topic. :-)

Mahonri.org Announcements

I'm assuming that YASS stands for "Yet Another Scoop Site." I have about three:
  • Mahonri.org Religious and family news and discussion from a LDS (Mormon) point of view.
  • Micro-Prince Computers Here is our company web site. Scoop alows us to post articles and update content without worrying about building new pages from scratch. We've just changed over to scoop, so we still have some bugs to work out, but it gives our clients a better place to go than our old ugly site.
  • Concerned Taxpayers of Duval County A local political site that desperately needs some maintanence right now.
We host one other scoop site, but I'll let Bob tell you about that one. ;-)

Table elements in the blocks Bugs

OK, many of you who have scoop sites may have noticed this, and I'm sure that some of you have figured it all out. I haven't, so here's my plea for help:

In the default scoop setup, table elements are spread across more than one block, and some pages just don't display right.

Hi, this is a feature that every community-oriented portal (should) have : links repository. Sharing what's cool on the web would be the 1st thing a web community would do, isn't ?

Hey scoopers,
I am finally getting around to putting together a site I told Rusty I would make a long time ago. A Scoop hosting site. Basically, I wanna accomplish three things.
