What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

I have launched a scoop site (www.rantapalooza.com) with the goal of giving the criminally insane the voice they deserve on the internet as well as putting forth a solid effort to stop the hamburglar. It's more of a random submission of amusing rants and other items, but the scoop engine has been absolutely optimal for the goals I had when forming this site.
Most rants are about mullets, white trash, and the crap hollywood seems to be churning out without failure with no real boundries.
The site address is www.rantapalooza.com

"Write On" is a site for dicussion of (you guessed it) writing. Fiction of any and all genres, non-fiction, random thoughts about writing, short exercises, it's there. About the only thing that isn't done there is critiques of stories intended for publication and publication of fiction. It can be found at http://paradox.homeip.net/write-on/
If you're interested in writing, whether you're experienced or a novice, you're more than welcome to drop by and say hello.

Just a quick announcement. I have just built "YASS" at www.sonicmatrix.org. Sonicmatrix is a site dedicated to community discussion of computer hardware, software, networks and security, plus the occasional special interest topic.
Our tagline is "breaking the technology sound barrier" which is really what we're all about ... Pushing technology and its applications forward, dispelling myth and flawed analyses of technology, and generally increasing the signal to noise ratio for technology discussion relative to other sites in this space ;-)
We're also striving for more of a community feel. Visitors, comments and feedback all welcome.

New Scoop site at scoop.underground.net

I'm attempting to go for a completely different look than all the other scoop sites, trying to impliment a nice looking front-end, with minimal graphics, but something that will appeal to the non-techical community (I'm based out of Hollywood, if you know what I mean!). The site's at scoop.underground.net

What Now?

A month ago, Scoop 0.8 was released, with all kinds of improvments over Scoop
0.6. Since then, not much has happened in development. But hopefully that will
change before long, as developers find time to code new things, and maybe even
some patches will come in :) So now is the time to speak up. What features do
you want to see in the next release (Scoop 1.0, most likely)? How do you want
those features to work? What do you think needs improvement? Post below any
ideas you have, and want to see in Scoop.

New Server

Scoop is on a new server now. It's on my server :-) So now I have pretty direct control over what happens on it. I'm still getting it all worked out and dialed in here, so if you notice any troubles please mail andrew-scoop (at) hurstdog.org or just post them to this story. First off though, I know there are a few broken links here and there, I will fix those soon. Second, if you have been having trouble logging in and been getting internal server errors, they should be fixed now, let me know if they continue.

Postgres Scoop

I have the beginnings of a Postgres-based Scoop running at http://www.toddbrandlabs.com:8080/scoop
Obviously, it will be jumping up and down like a yo-yo over the next few days I need to make it solid, but I'm rather close. It's a fork off the 0.8 tarball so it's at least reasonably current.

How do you get a provider that will deal with DOS attacks?

Our scoop site, Adequacy.org was taken down by a DOS attack just over a month after we went live. Ultimately we were forced to switch providers.
