What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

Often I have wanted to submit an article to K5 that was incomplete - Perhaps I wanted to document a project from start to finish, or I wanted to chronicle a set of events in real time that hadn't all yet occurred; and you really can't do it.

A feature which I posted in my diary on Kuro5hin and was well recieved as a potentially useful time saving feature is this: make individual users diary pages hotlistable.

Slash 2.0 has a nifty messaging feature, one benefit of which is you can be notified when someone replies to your message. This ought to help threads live longer, since people would see a reply they might otherwise miss on their comment list.
Herein, I propose a similar feature for scoop.

"Active discussions" list

How about an "active discussions" user information link which lists, in story-section style (i.e. with the intro text and comments/new information) stories and diaries which have a comment by the specified user? It'd be easier to track discussions than the "comments by" link.

To save all that effort of clicking the small tickbox wouldn't it be gosh darn swell if you could just click the text beside the tickbox? You can! <input type="checkbox" id="option1" name="aid" value="1" /><label for="option1">First poll option</label>

A Proposal: Wikis for Scoop
|
|
By Eloquence , Section Wishlist [] Posted on Mon Sep 24, 2001 at 12:00:00 PM PST

The style of weblogs is very linear - it lends itself well to news, diaries and interesting findings on the web, but it is less suitable for long-term, goal-oriented discussion of a subject, or collaborative content creation. The integration of a wiki into the Scoop codebase would make it possible to use a Scoop site for both purposes. If you don't know what Wikis are, I recommend a look at Wikipedia, which is perhaps one of the most impressive wikis currently available, with over 11,000 articles. Read on for how wikis could be integrated into Scoop in several steps.

Admin Logging

When I moved Smokedot over to Scoop, I decided to stay with the closed-queue style rather than a k5-style open queue. Unlike Slashdot, though, I decided to give a whole pile of people editor accounts to provide a more balanced selection of stories being posted. The problem that this caused was that I can't tell who is doing what. So a feature I'd like to see in Scoop is a logging mechanism which logs all actions done by editors and admins (stories posted, stories deleted, comments deleted, stories edited, etc...) and a nice web interface to view this through (and, I suppose, a permission to set who can view it). I'd be happy to write this feature, but before I go out and do it I'd like to hear what you guys think.

install scoop without root

I thought I read a story about this somewhere but I couldn't find it.
I would like to be able to run scoop without access to httpd.conf. Is there a solution that allows me to do this? If not, an interface through a perl script may be useful.
