What is Scoop
|
Scoop is a "collaborative media application". It falls somewhere between a
content management system, a web bulletin board system, and a weblog.
Scoop is designed to enable your website to become a community. It empowers
your visitors to be the producers of the site, contributing news and discussion,
and making sure that the signal remains high.

Where can I get Scoop
|
You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.
If you have any problems with this site or your user account, e-mail the Admin

Hi,
I'm trying the automatic installer and getting the following:
Warning: Cannot install Bundle::Scoop, don't know what it is.
Try the command
i /Bundle::Scoop/
to find objects with matching identifiers.
...
%cpan
cpan shell -- CPAN exploration and modules installation (v1.59)
ReadLine support enabled
cpan> i /Bundle::Scoop/
CPAN: Storable loaded ok
Going to read /root/.cpan/Metadata
No objects found of any type for argument /Bundle::Scoop/
Any thoughts?

Upgrading from 0.8 -> 0.9, Advertisements
|
|

I recently ran through the upgrade from 0.8 to 0.9 on www.ie-ap.org/wwwboard and the advertising subsection seems to be broken on the new site. Just out of curiosity, I ran an install of 0.9 without dumping in the database from 0.8 and the ads sections seemed to work fine. It was only after running the database upgrade that the ads system seemed to break. Clicking on the links in the advertising section (post new ad, sumbitted ads, and so on) just spit out the same page that links to them.
Normally, I wouldn't mind just starting over from scratch, but i've already put lots of time into creating stories and little customizations here and there, and I'm not a MySQL guru, so I'd rather not this time.
I'd appreciate any guidance on this.. Thanks!

I recently upgraded my site to v0.9. But I cannot get dynamic comments to work, and I cannot find any documentation available anywhere.

so, i am building a new site, and i opted to run scoop as its core component, pretty sure it could do what i want. but now i am beginning to wonder if i can hack my way through this with the existing functionality or if the task will require copius programming that is far beyond my abilities.

Linking to custom pages...
|

By pog , Section Help! [] Posted on Tue Oct 15, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST

Can anyone shed some light on how to make links to some pages i want to create within scoop?
Basically, i want to make a series of pages in a custom category (eg, 'products'). Then i want to link to them from button images.
Are the pages made as templates? And how is the path to the pages created?
Any comments appreciated!

style sheets
|

By bob , Section Help! [] Posted on Fri Oct 11, 2002 at 12:00:00 PM PST

How would I set up cascading style sheets for use within scoop? This seems a very important step that would allow people to design rich and varied user interfaces. The easier it is to set up scoop from a designers point of view the more people that will use it. Has anyone given this consideration or started to implement a solution?
thanks,
Bob

Good job, some people don't even get as far as you just have. But now that you've got it installed, I'll bet that you want to do something more than the basic setup that Scoop ships with. This guide is intended to be as non-technical as possible, but still explain how to customize your Scoop site to look exactly like you want it to.
This guide will assume that you already know some HTML, if you don't know that, I would suggest you start with plain HTML before trying to administer a Scoop site.

Odd clock behavior

I searched the site for this problem, and didn't find it. Basically, here's what happens:
- If the var time_zone in site controls is set to GMT, the comments all have the correct time (assuming the users sets their time zone correctly as well).
- If the var time_zone in site controls is set to PST (where the server actually is), the Stories all have the correct time (assuming the users sets their time zone correctly as well).
