Where can I get Scoop

You can download the latest release tarball: scoop_1.1.8.tar.gz
You can grab the nightly build. Note: This is generated automatically from the current CVS, and may not be reliable! Get that here: scoop-1.1-nightly.tar.gz
The developers strongly recommend CVS as the primary way to obtain Scoop, since releases tend to have pretty long delays between them. If you have CVS installed, do the following:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ scoop.versionhost.com:/cvs/scoop co scoop
The above is two commands; each one must be on a single line. When prompted for a password for anonymous, enter 'anonymous' (without the quotes). For more CVS info, "Open Source Development with CVS" is an excellent online reference.

Where can I get help
|
|
There are several sources of information and support for Scoop. The first place to look is the scoop-help mailing list. You can browse the archives, or join the list. If you want to post a question, joining the list is strongly recommended. You can also join the #scoop IRC channel on SlashNET.
For documentation, there is the (largely complete) Scoop administrator's guide. You can also read the current
README and
INSTALL files, from Scoop WebCVS (username and password are both "anonymous"). The admin guide is also included with Scoop, in the doc/ directory.
If you have new feature ideas or requests, or descriptions of something you're working on for Scoop, this site is the place to submit them. You can also search this site for information. If you want to get your hands dirty, or have any questions about developing for Scoop, there is also the Scoop-dev list. You can browse the archives, or join the list.
Bug reports and patches should be filed on the Scoop Bug Muncher.

Well, after playing around forever and a day with the idea and several attempts with other software www.SharedWriting.com is finally alive and kickin'.
As the name would suggest it is a place for sharing your writings. In this case, specifically, fiction stories. I'm still building the FAQ, but I posted a couple of stories which should give people the general idea.

I am in the process of moving my website. I would like to find a webhost that supports scoop.
I know nothing about Linux or Scoop except as a new member of kuro5hin.org. But from what I have seen at K5, it appears to be a powerful and useful program. I understand it can be completely configured from a web browser.
Are there any web hosts that provide scoop support?
I have some experience with weblogs. I currently run a Manila site which is a Userland product. But scoop seems to do a number of things better.

Well, as anyone that runs scoop knows, the documentation is not up to par. In fact, I think we just have a few vars documented as of right now. Thats pretty sickly. So what we would like, is for people to contribute documentation. We don't need anyone to take it over completely, we'll manage all of it here, but to just contribute. So below is a list the different features we need documented, and all we're asking, is that you contribute to one section. That way its not so overwhelming as to agree to do it all. Even if you want to contribute to part of a section, it will help. Of course, you don't have to contribute, but every little bit helps.
Update [2001-6-29 21:11:29 by panner]: I've taken over the docs project, and started on a new Scoop
Administrator Guide. I'm using LyX to write it in, and latex2html with some
custom scrips wrapped around it to convert. So far, it's looking good, but I'm
just getting started. I plan to write as much as possible, but if anyone wants
to write part of it, I'd certainly appreciate it. If you do write part of it,
just mail it to me (panner[at]qx[dot]net) and I'll add it in. You can see what I've got so far here. I'll try to remember to update this as much as possible (probably write another script :).

Instead of saying "Moderate Stories (x new)", it seems like it would be good to say "Moderate Stories (x/y new)".

As you will all know, Scoop is written in Perl. It also depends on a dozen or so modules from a Perl module archive called CPAN. And it's hell on installers when 3rd party modules you depend on change a little underneath you. This is my story of installing Scoop.

How does the recent_news_box work? I can't find a reference for recent_news_box in vars,blocks or boxes. I checked the mailing list, but no go. Anyone have the code for it?

Scoop.kuro5hin.org is back online on a new server (after the old one flaked out). The old one will be looked into to figure out why it failed. In the mean time, the new machine should be available and happy 24/7 since it's now within easy kicking distance :)
